Plain Label String Band

Plain Label members come from varied professional and musical backgrounds.  Kathy Kuehn, who frails banjo, is a retired Medical Social Worker.  Susan “Sam” Loken plays fiddle and jaw harp and is a retired tax specialist.   Stephen Hull plays guitar and mandolin family instruments.  Steve is a retired water resources specialist and describes himself as a “river rat”.  All the members of Plain Label share vocals.  Despite very different backgrounds Plain Label members share a love of traditional old time music.  They have delved into the realm of song writing and have had several of their songs part of the New Songwriters showcase at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas.  They have been able to develop a sound that is pleasant to hear and a style which encourages the audience to respond.

Plain Label is known for its style and showmanship.  Members have participated in many regional music festivals as featured performers, contestants and judges.  Audiences throughout Nebraska, Iowa Missouri, Kansas and South Dakota enjoy Plain Label.  They perform professionally in public schools, retirement centers, assisted living centers, community centers, family concerts, and for private parties.

During the 1980’s Plain Label made numerous visits to the local cable access channel to record over a dozen hours of video showcasing their wide repertory of old time and contemporary music.  From the 1990’s their three cassette tapes have been given great reviews by young and old.  “What’s that Noise” is a collection of all traditional tunes.  “Make a Joyful Noise” is a collection of gospel songs, including some original and some traditional material.  “Playin’” is a tape of songs written by the members of the band and are geared toward children but enjoyed by all ages.

Plain Label gives you an opportunity to enjoy some old-timey fun.  Audiences find it hard to keep their toes from tapping when this band strikes up a tune.

Listening to Plain Label is an opportunity for you to forget the hurry up world of today and to relax with sounds from less complicated times.  Audiences find it difficult to remain uninvolved when Plain label strikes up traditional and contemporary tunes that are a part of our American heritage.   Plain Label members have been enjoying music together since the 1970’s.
